Society Registration

Unite for a common cause. Register your society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, to carry out charitable, literary, scientific, educational, or cultural welfare activities.

Society Registration and Welfare

A Society is a legally recognized non-profit organization formed by a group of people—usually a minimum of seven members—who join together to work toward a shared objective that benefits the public.

These objectives can include education, social welfare, art and culture, scientific research, environmental protection, religious activities, or community development. Societies are registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, which provides them with a legal identity and a structured framework to operate.

Benefits of Registration

Legal Identity

Once registered, a society can function as a formal entity with the ability to open a bank account, hold property in its name, and enter into legal agreements.

Receive Funding

A registered society is eligible to receive donations, government grants, and international funding (if FCRA registered).

Governance and Structure

A society is managed by a governing body or managing committee that oversees operations and ensures that activities are carried out according to the society’s objectives and rules.

Since societies are strictly non-profit in nature, any income earned must be used to further their charitable goals rather than being distributed among members. This collective, democratic structure makes society registration highly suitable for educational institutions, cultural groups, and large social organizations.

The Registration Process

  • 1

    Minimum Members

Gather at least 7 members (from the same or different states depending on state vs national level registration) to form the governing body.

  • 2

    Name Selection

Choose a unique name. It must not suggest government patronage or infringe on existing trademarks.

  • 3

    Memorandum & Bye-Laws

Draft the Memorandum of Association (MOA) containing the society's aims, and the Rules & Regulations governing internal affairs.

  • 4

    Affidavits & KYC

Collect PAN cards, address proofs, and NOCs for the registered office address.

  • 5

    Filing with Registrar

Submit all documents to the state Registrar of Societies along with the requisite fee. Upon approval, the registration certificate is granted.
